Teachers Workshops
Partners
in Behavioral Health Sciences (PIBHS) offers one-,
two-, and three-day summer workshops to inform K-12 teachers and
other school personnel about the biological and behavioral aspects of
mental health and substance abuse problems. These workshops include
lecture-style presentations, interactive role-play exercises, discussion groups,
question-and-answer forums, and opportunities for informal networking.
Faculty members from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
(UAMS) as well as scientists and professionals from the central Arkansas
community volunteer
their time as
faculty.

Workshops are held on the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
(UAMS) campus, and are free of charge for attendees, who typically
include school personnel such as science teachers, nurses, guidance
counselors, social workers, psychologists, and principals. All
attendees receive a
variety of resource materials, including teaching aids such as lesson plans, handouts, classroom displays, and examinations.
Certificates are awarded for completion of
each workshop. Attendance at these workshops may qualify for continuing education (CE) credits for
various professional disciplines. However, attendees are responsible for
checking with the appropriate licensure or certification board in advance to determine eligibility of these activities for CE
credits.
More
than 2400 school personnel have attended PIBHS summer workshops to date.
The number of participants has risen at an average rate of 25% per year,
and one out of every four participants have attended more than one
workshop. Over one third of participants come from communities with a
population of 10,000 or less.
