Partners in Behavioral Health Sciences (PIBHS) offered summer volunteer positions to provide high school students interested in careers in psychiatry, psychology, and other behavioral health disciplines with an opportunity to learn about these fields through hands-on experience grounded in a "real-world" work environment. Volunteers worked as part of an interdisciplinary team of mental health researchers and clinicians developing, implementing, and evaluating various components of the PIBHS program, including the summer workshops for teachers and other school personnel, the teaching toolkit, and this web site.
Depending on program needs as well as student interests and availability, volunteers gained valuable experience in various aspects of behavioral health research, including library research, data collection, and data entry. In addition, they gained exposure to behavioral health service systems through site visits to local mental health care facilities. They had the opportunity to attend a variety of academic lectures, seminars, and other educational activities, and to shadow UAMS faculty members working in their specific areas of interest.
There are currently no plans for a volunteer program in 2006.
